Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area

About

At Bogus Basin's SnowSchool we are creating a "classroom without walls", and first hand experience for the students is the top priority. When students and teachers arrive by bus they are met by instructors, a team of community volunteers, and BSU environmental science students. We outfit the kids with snowshoes, break them into groups of 10 and then each volunteer leader takes the kids for a science based exploration of the Boise National Forest. Students learn about winter ecology and the importance of the snowpack in our community through conducting a snow pit analysis (digging a hole in the snow), conducting a snow water equivalency test (taking a pitcher of snow and trying to guess how much water it will yield when melted), building a map of our watershed out of snow, and following animal tracks in the snow, etc! Everything we do is tied into state education standards in science, social studies and physical education.
