This form is for students choosing to design their own service-learning project. The Service-Learning Program cannot be held responsible for student-initiated service. It is imperative that the faculty member and student ensure the service project meets course learning objectives and is in accordance with Boise State University Service-Learning Program policies*.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Consult with your instructor to discuss your learning objectives and project parameters.
2. Identify a community partner and project that fits the learning objectives of your course. For tips on how to initiate contact with an agency and negotiate a project with them, please see “Ten Steps to Succeeding In Your Student-Initiated Service-Learning Project” available at https://www.boisestate.edu/servicelearning/forms/.
*Policy notes: The service must be with a community organization whose primary purpose is providing a significant public service or public good (most likely this will be a nonprofit, government, or B-corps which addresses a community need). The organization must carry liability and worker’s compensation insurance covering volunteers. Please review “Risk & Safety” guidelines here: https://www.boisestate.edu/servicelearning/risk-management-and-safety/. Students are not allowed to count SL hours for activities that involve lobbying or require religious instruction and/or worship.
